Anyone who has ever seen a movie or television program covering the lives of professional poker players might be under the impression that these players lead glamorous lives of excess and luxury on the level of royalty. Hollywood and the television industry go out of their way to depict these players as some type of international playboy, living the good life and enjoying all the finer things. The truth about the professional poker player is far different, as poker players have to put up with all kinds of inhospitable conditions as well as deal with multiple difficulties in building and maintaining their career as well as continuing to make it to the table on a regular basis.

The difficulties begin as soon as the poker player begins building a bankroll. The difficulty in building a strong bankroll cannot be overstated, as during the process of building this bankroll you will no doubt be brought back to square one on several occasions. While this process is normal, it can be very frustrating for the professional poker player. Being under this pressure to succeed, knowing that you have no safety net should you manage to burn through your bankroll, is devastating to the poker player. Walking a thin line between being on top and being on the bottom, the professional poker player has little other choice but to stay in the game, not necessarily because they might want to, but because they have no other choice. Once locked into the professional poker player lifestyle, there is very little chance of leaving it for any other type of income. Players get locked into the lifestyle that allows the poker player to become completely encompassed in poker, which can come with all manner of bad habits, which makes them even more dependent on the poker player lifestyle to make ends meet.

Once the poker player has committed to the professional lifestyle, it is very difficult indeed to maintain his existence, as there is never a break from the nonstop poker game that the professional must participate in to remain on top. The never ending stream of competitors, money and the drain on the players resources from staying in hotels and other locations while gaming and gambling can very quickly lead the poker playing professional to become burned out.

While this information likely would not be scary to anybody who intends to become a professional poker player, it is important to know that the professional poker player lifestyle is nowhere near as glamorous as many have been led to believe.
